Muzzle -- Forward-most part of the barrel from which the projectile exits when a firearm is discharged. -- Nov. 1, 2012

Muzzle Brake -- A device that is either an integral part of the barrel or attached directly to it that reduces recoil and muzzle flip when a firearm is discharged. Most muzzle brakes today are attached to a portion of the barrel near the muzzle that is threaded but some barrels have holes or ports drilled directly into them. One of the most effective muzzle brakes in the long history of firearms is the one designed for the 7.92 x 57mm German FG42 assault rifle. A video of the FG42 muzzle brake’s effectiveness can be seen on the Smithsonian Channel show The Weapon Hunter, episode 14. -- January 5, 2016*
