ALL ABOUT GUNS DICTIONARY-T
Thompson Submachinegun -- .45 ACP fullautomatic firearm invented by General John Taliaferro Thompson. Originally intended for military use in trench warfare, the Thompson SMG gained notoriety during the 1920’s and 1930’s because of its use by both criminals and the lawmen that tracked them down. Also known colloquially as the “Tommygun,” “Chicago Typewriter,” “Chicago Piano,” “trench broom” and “chopper.” -- Nov. 1, 2012
Trigger -- The part of a firearm used by the shooter to begin the process of ignition. Twist rate -- A measurement of the distance required for a gun barrel’s rifling to complete one full revolution. Twist rates are normally expressed as a ratio, such as 1-in-9 inches, 1-in-9” or 1/9. The optimum twist rate for stabilizing a bullet is determined by taking into consideration several factors, among which are the bullet’s length, the velocity it will be fired at and the maximum range of the target to be engaged. In general, the longer the bullet, the faster the twist rate will have to be to stabilize it in flight. -- Apr. 30, 2013
Tround -- Cartridge invented by David Dardick in 1954 for use in the Dardick Series 1500 pistol. Instead of a conventional metallic case, the tround utilized a plastic, triangular-shaped case that fired a .38 caliber bullet. The Dardick pistol used a revolving mechanism that fed trounds from a magazine in the grip and could be converted into a rifle with the use of a conversion kit. It could also fire 22 Long Rifle ammunition by using an accessory barrel and chamber insert. The Dardick pistol was offered for sale from 1954 to 1962 but never achieved wide acceptance and is now a rare collector’s item.-- November 3, 2015*
