von Mannlicher, Herr Ferdinand Ritter (b. 1848 - d. 1904) -- German-born former Chief Engineer of the Austrian Imperial Northern Railroad and designer of guns for Oesterreichische Waffenfabrik Gesellschaft, Steyr. Herr Mannlicher was one of the world’s greatest gun designers and received patents on approximately 150 types of rifles, machineguns, pistols and several types of magazines. The Dutch, Romanian and Portuguese armies used bolt action Mannlicher rifles in the 1890s while the Austrian and Hungarian armies used straight-pull Mannlicher rifles from 1886 to the end of World War 2. -- November 25,  2015*
