Berdan Primers -- Berdan primers, developed in the U.S. not long after the Civil War, are the result of the efforts of Hiram Berdan of Berdan’s Sharpshooters fame, Marcellus Hartley and Alfred C. Hobbs, both of Union Metallic Cartridge Company. Although eclipsed in general use in the U.S. by Boxer primers, a British invention, Berdan primers are still widely used in the rest of the world.
